Hello, good afternoon, What a pleasure you are with us once again in this program: "Art, the imagination of the Spirit." I am very happy because a photographer who I had the opportunity to meet more or less about 2 years ago when he arrived in Oaxaca is with us and as you well know, here in Oaxaca we always welcome people with open arms and apart from that we are very happy to Let them come and share all the knowledge they have and well he is with us, I will just say the name and that he give the surname because it is quite unique and Spiro is counting on us. Spiro Thank you so much for being here with us.
Thank you very much. This is a great pleasure to see you again.
And great pleasure to talk. of your work and that's how they will have noticed there is a photo that Spiro took of me a few years ago. One of several that has taken me. I have to admit that he is one of my pampered and favorite photographers because he takes a singular photograph, a photograph where I believe it goes beyond what the image is. I always told him, even with this work, that it is how to portray the soul. Not? So a little more the feeling of the person to see Spiro leaves, that I do not talk so much. Tell me what is your last name Spiro?
Ah! My name is Spiro Polichronopoulos, it is a typical Greek name.
Spiro is from Greece. AHA !
Yes. I was born in Greece, I live in Canada for many years. I studied in Canada at the University. Right now I am in Oaxaca (Oaxaqueño) and I hope to have my Mexican residence in a short time. I am very happy. Oaxaca is a very, very beautiful place.
Hears ! Haber Spiro, tell me. . . Did you study photography?
Yes.
Where did you study photography?
I studied Photography, at Ryerson University in Toronto and before Ryerson University, I studied philosophy at McGill University in Montreal.
Hey, Spiro and how did you decide to become a professional photographer?
I took photos from before as an attraction. I, yes, this was this non-professional art before, but (for) a long time I, I say (I said): "Why not do something in life that (I,) like?" And that's why I got involved in photography and obviously, I work in photography for many years at a time. I don't work in photography to help my family in Canada. But later when I found my wife, I will do photography and right now it is something that leaves me a lot of pleasure and I continue this my art. My art, my love.
And what kind of photography did you take before? Have they always been portraits? How is it that you got involved?
Yes. Many portraits. Portraits for me are a very intimate thing and I really like taking photos of people and how you explain that part of looking for the soul of this person. Ah! Also for commercial work I take photos of Weddings, Beauty and Editorials.
Editorial.
Editorial. Yes! Much Editorial.
And besides, there are many magazines in Oaxaca and they have always been like this part where you can also develop your work.
Yes, little by little I (the) people started my knowing me knowing my work for many years. I take (r) a lot of photos for my wife's brand and we have a makeup brand. I take many many photos, and many works, it is concentrated in this project. Right now I take (take) this time, because I can show my work, my professional and personal work that can show people that they can see much more than just this project.
When I had the opportunity to meet you, Spiro and that we were able to do this photoshoot, for example, people already see an image that is like: "Okay what a father!" That you can spend at least two hours trying to look like one - I think the person you're going to take the photo of - feels confident. . . no ? That can really flow (huh?) Before you with the camera? But all this is a great job and not just this, there is also the editing. ! This work, this process costs a lot. !
Tell me a little bit about this job.
The reality that. . . Yes. It is a job, but it is also a discover (discovery) of the person. It's a job as an artist. What we want to look for in this job. For looking for this essence. We need to obtain a confidence (confidence), and that confidence (professional confidence), as (example) and after the edition that are different from commercial photos we dedicate much more time. This is a photo, it is a portrait, I want it to look different. When looking for this essence, we need to be aware and then the obvious commercial photo frame edition of your photo is a portrait of your portrait of the person and I want you to see it, not change it.
Like in Photoshop you suddenly see the person and it is another. (Your Work) More than anything it is like (photographing) the essence of the person. Tell me about the material you use. How is it printed? How long does it last? Because these photos are of high quality. No ?
Yes. ! The Material part that I use with all my photos is a cotton paper. It's a very very very good role. It is archival too and can last 100 years if not abused. And yes, all my work that I print is on that paper.
So that it has a better quality, more clarity and lasts longer and all this. No ? Tell me a little bit about this job.
Yes. ! It has better color absorption. And it has a better presence (presentation) of its tones.
You hear. Is it the same to photograph a woman than a man?
Yes. ! It does not matter.
Yes?
Yes. ! It does not matter. Because it is the Soul. The soul is the same. We have no difference.
These photos where did you take them?
Yes. ! These two photos is film. It is a Process ah. . .What is your name? It is not Digital. I take this for the magazine. It is a part of a magazine article in (Montreal) but we took several photos a few naked of the body and part of the man and I did the other one is a commercial session for (For hair products). When we finished the Commercial Session, we played a little in the photography I look for this one. . .
How this angle? This splendor, which remains in the photo. Hey, but then all your work has actually been based a lot like for editorial, for commercials for many more professional things, this in Canada.
Yes. In Canada I work a lot with magazines. By (for) different trading options. Here people, companies, begin to recognize, and little by little I (I am getting into the photographic medium and the publishing and commercial business)
They have already been looking for you. True?
Yes. !
Most of your photos are in color or black and white? Or is it how people are asking you?
Actually, my commercial work is more or less in color for the beauty too, but I really like working in black and white, black and white. Why am I smooth with this form of photography? I work for many years on what is called? the Dark Room, where do we do it by hand, right?
With film and everything, and it is a (a) part (wonderful and artistic) to recorer this process.
Yes, it is a little more handmade, it is a handmade process. So to speak. And how was it for you to arrive in Oaxaca? You have a . . . I don't know how you can tell! You have a Photographic Study on Guelaguetza.
Yes! I have an Edition of Photos that I take in the Guelaguetza and I exhibited it in the Galleria ( Caballero Escobar ) "Alexis Escobar", in Matamoros. It has been, I think, two and a half months. Three months. And I hope to have another exhibition I believe this, this exhibition at" Casa Barro ". For the Portraits this time.
Ooh! Perfect ! But for you to see so much color of Oaxaca that you weren't used to, does the direction of the photography move you a little? Or is it the same? Living with all the folklore and customs of Oaxaca have you changed a bit in terms of photography?
Ah! Yes! I change the? ( Photography ? ) . . . Actually I saw this culture with an obvious filter, from me The culture that I was born. . . from the culture that I come from. In reality the culture, the Soul of, the Culture, is the same! No ? The Soul of the Greek Culture is also the Soul of the Oaxacan Culture. That changes only in the forms. And we can take photos in those ways. But the result is the same because we show the soul, behind in this way.
So is!. Hey, has Spiro been difficult for you? Right now, huh! Well, everyone can have a camera! Not? either on the Cell phone, and that blurring you can be almost, almost like a professional, according to us. . . But it's not like that ! It is difficult for people in Mexico to understand the costs, for example when you take a professional photo. It has nothing to do with it. And I'm not saying it's wrong. It's good that all those young guys are taking pictures for today. . . Hey! . . . college or high school girls. It's okay. But the prices are very different.
Yes The prices are very different, and the Processes are very different. Professionals are not fast as usual, we take our time to look for the best view and the best option to show, what we need to communicate for our clients. Obviously all this professionalism comes at a price. It has a cost. Obviously we need to balance the prices that we want and the prices that people can pay. I am very open to various options and what I want is to work!
Do you also take pictures for Events? Or just Study?
Events too! Yes. Last week I took pictures of my first Quinceañera. Yes! I love !
Wow! The rhythm is different. Not? Because everything is happening. Because you have to have a guide to all the events of the Quinceañera. Be moving, the light, everything! Here in a room where you are directing the light and everything is quieter on pause. Was this experience a father? To be with the Quinceañera. ?
Yes! I loved the experience! Because it is obvious it is a very successful day for this girl and for her family too! And sharing this success with them is very interesting and obviously we want as professionals to show this success in the communication of photography. From the View of this project.
Okay ! Then you will spend it editing all these days to be able to deliver this project.
Yes!.
Hears ! Spiro, and. . . Tell us more or less at what prices they are if someone wants a photo shoot with you, an approximate.
Yes! An approximate, a professional photo like yours, is Two Thousand Pesos. (MX $ 2,000.oo) But it is not a ten minute process. We take our time looking for better options. Obviously for women they need to have makeup, hairstyle, dress. We thought about all this before.
In fact right now. . . You were telling me that. . . Sorry to interrupt you! The Two Thousand Pesos (MX $ 2,000.oo) is a promotion that you have in these months. True ?
It is actually a Promotion! But I want to continue with these prices. Because I do not want to be higher than people can not pay. I actually want to work. I want to find people who know my work. Not only that you know me. . .
People who know your work.
Not only that he knows my work. May we share this communication that I can show your. . .
Personality.
Yes. . .
You deliver a photo of the Photo Session. No ? More or less . . .
It's independent. Anyone who wants different views. If we can take other views and we can also adjust the prices. Because it is obvious, it is important!
That is important! I believe that everyone should always have a photo of a great photographer, because it speaks a lot about the moments that one is living. Right now, and it reminds me, and I see myself, I see that photo and it reminds me of a time I was living. And the photography certainly reflects this. No ?.
And all the work, yes, by equipment that we have to take those photos. It is an obvious process, but it is a very loving process. It is a labor of love, for us professionals, and also for people who want to have a view of their being.
And . . . if people want to go to a studio for a photo shoot? Where do you have your Studio? What phones do you have for them to look for you? . . ?
My Studio is in my house, in "Cinco Señores", in Colonia Cieneguita, Calle 21 de Marzo, House # 128, that's the location. My phone number is 951 - 327 92 49.
Very good ! . . . Two years ago I met him, he had a much harder time being able to speak Spanish. But I see that you have come a long way!
Little by little, I, it's obvious I don't speak very well. But people teach me.
Yes of course! . . . I have been in several photographic sessions with him, it is very enriching to be part of a project, because Spiro gives you confidence, he takes a lot of patience so that one can relax and take the best photo.
That is my (life) project. We are not only looking for the physical part, but we are looking a bit for History, which is not clear! but it is searched in the photo view. Yes. I can communicate that part! That good !. It is the success of my work ...

I will make you look fantastic ! Being beautiful and being photogenic are not the same thing, you can be both beautiful and photogenic but they are not mutually exclusive to each other. Some people will think that; many of the best beauty faces I have photographed were imperfect in some way or another. Often it was the imperfections that made them beautiful and photogenic. For some people, many of these "imperfect models" would not get a second look from many Model Agents or Art Directors, because in person they are not that spectacular to look at and can be quite ordinary looking to the layman, it is only when they are in front of a camera does their true beauty start to shine.
